Hello lovely souls:) After a good night's sleep and a morning walk with the doggie that I am dog sitting, I am relaxed and ready for the day. It can be hard to get out of a funk when we feel down, but I find that even a little thing like brushing my teeth can help me prepare myself mindfully for the day ahead. If you do things in a mindful manner, you will find that your focus is on the present rather than on the what if. Finding a grounding technique that works for you is not as easy as some might think. Here is another technique that can help you during those moments where you need to take a step back and ground yourself mentally and physically. Distraction can be a useful tool if negative emotions become too overwhelming. Here are some examples of using distractions as a grounding technique.
⊙ Pick a colour and try and find as many things you can see that has that colour.
⊙ Pick a category and name all the things you can about it.
⊙ Count backwards by 5 from 100.
⊙ Recite a favourite peom, song, or quote.
