"I wonder what it would be like to live in a world where it was always June." —L.M. Montgomery

I am not a summer person, so that quote is not my type of season. I do love a few warm days by the beach, but I would also crave the winter and its snow. I find that I ground myself more when the weather is cooler. Grounding brings you back to your present. I have been doing it a lot this week. It is a good technique to practice especially if you suffer from panic and anxiety attacks. Our senses play such a big part of our daily lives, but we tend to not really be conscious of the detail they are sending us. This method of grounding is called 5-4-3-2-1 method. First try and find a quiet spot to sit or face a window. Then close your eyes and breathe in and out for ten counts. Focusing only on your lungs filling up with air and releasing it out slowly. After this, open your eyes slowly and look around you. Try to spot 5 things that you can see. Do not move around too much, just move your neck and head allowing your shoulders and lower body to relax. Next try and find 4 things you can hear. Focus on the sounds surrounding you. Once you do this, try and notice 3 things you can feel. For example the pressure on your legs as you sit on the floor or the way your chest moves when you breathe in and out etc. Lastly, find one thing you can smell. Mindfully focusing on these little grounding exercises can help calm your heart rate and relax tensions in your body.
