If you know me at all, you know that I am South African. I grew up in the suburbs of sunny Jozi. I used to go to the sea often, but my most amazing memory to this day was going to see the penguins in the summer on the coast of Cape Town. I dreamed of surfing for years before I took lessons, I am not the best, but I can stand up for awhile. I do miss those days. Penguins have always fascinated me. They are so unique and their relationships are phenomenal. Ask any South African where you can go to see African penguins in the wild and they will probably tell you to head to Boulders Beach at Cape Town's Simon's Town. But, what few South Africans are aware of is that prior to 1985, these penguin colonies did not exist at all... and that their existence is a scary warning to us. African penguins are clearly resilient animals, but they are on the decline due to many factors the biggest being global warming and over fishing of their food supply, sardines. We as humans have made a big impact on their livelihood. Sadly, it may be too late for many of them, but there is hope for them if we humans start making lasting changes. It was not the norm for colonies to be completely abandoned, but these particular penguins have brought joy to many souls and I only hope that we can give them the help they need so that they do not abandon this colony.
